shots all around!

August 28th, 2009

I was just starting to read this, on one of the “Real Food” sites I read regularly – but there is a TON of information to wade through, regarding vaccinations, etc.

Now, I take a firm stance that the terrible edible foodlike substances that we call food have a lot to do with many of the health problems facing us today.  I also think that the processed foods, the chemicals, the HFCS may play a contributing factor in autism.  I don’t know, I’m not an expert, but that’s my reaction.

I also believe in vaccinating, because I think it’s dangerous not to – though I wouldn’t consider vaccinating for something like chicken pox, which every single kid in my kindergarten class had & we all survivied.  Chicken pox, to me, is like a right of passage.  And I do also believe that we NEED to get some illnesses, we need germs & bugs because we need immunity.  I will not be one of those mothers who sterilizes everything.  We need germs.

That being said, I have some great “blog friends” here – people I know to be reasonable & smart & who’s opinions I value & respect.  People who also have made mention of being against, or wary of, vaccinations.  So, while I want to vaccinate, I’m open to hearing why YOU (the wary/non vaccinate people) feel the way you do.  Or rather, after skimming over that article (and intending to go back and read more later), I’m ASKING you to tell me why you feel the way that you do – how you handled it, if you’re ok with vaccinating but just altered the schedule, etc.  Or if there were some vaccinations you got, but others you avoided like the plague…

It’s funny – all my life I’ve made incredibly spontaneous decisions, done things on impulse & never really bothered to weigh the options because I always grabbed onto my gut & dove in.  I like to think that maybe I have the makings of being a pretty good mom that when it comes to my child, I’ve said, “Gut, I hear you, but I need to think about it first.”  In the past 6 months, I’ve done more research on everything single thing that can impact my child than I’ve done in my entire LIFE.

I vaccinate. Well, I vaccinated. Wellll: I HAD vaccinated. Mothers do not risk their children’s health, AFAICS. Granted, when my kids were wee, here in NL, there was never really much question. But, BUT: when Thijs was four years old, he got sick. He coughed until his nose bled, until he vomited, he could do nothing else, weeks long. The medical experts did tests, tried antibiotics: no relief. My little boy was so miserable; he was SO SICK. Finally, he was tested for whooping cough. He had been vaccinated against it, yes, (which was why it was not suspected) but it turned out that – because whooping cough seemed to have retreated with its tail between its legs – the serum in the vaccine had been REDUCED. This idea – that we can actually BEAT disease that easily – mystified me. (An epidemic took place in Holland thanks to the change, and the change was duly undone) Anyhow: he was finally given the right antibiotics, and he got well, but his constant pseudo-croup and later asthma might well be blamed on that diluted vaccination. Who knows? He’s fine now, anyway.

I totally agree with the everyday germs & bugs. Get them used to the real world. Life-threatening DISEASE is not the real world, though.
